Travel update #16 – Life in Bundy

So, here we are again with a new travel update! This time, I’m on the train to Brisbane but more on that later. We have been in Bundaberg in recent months and lived more of the day-to-day life, but fortunately also did a number of ‘blogworthy’ things! 😊

In my last travel update I mentioned that we would go on a trip to Fraser Island with Samantha’s work, and that was really cool! Fraser Island is one of the things you will find on almost every must do list when looking up information about Australia. It is an island that you can only enter with a 4-wheel drive truck, because there are no roads. So you constantly drive through the sand and that was a really cool experience!

That is not the only thing on the island; there is a shipwreck, a beautiful lake and there are dingoes, which are actually a kind of dogs that roam freely on the island (but then slightly more dangerous then dogs). Perhaps they are best described as a cross between a dog and a wolf? Well, something like that.

Yes, that day was really cool, but I think the pictures will speak for themselves! 😊

A week later there was a fair in Bundaberg, which is so big that everyone in Bundaberg gets a day off for it. Of course we also went to take a look and that was fun. They had a rodeo with bulls and all kinds of typical carnival food, we thought we were in some kind of cowboy movie. Part of the rodeo were also the children riding (smaller) bulls, which was quite bizarre to see. Eventually the child was of course thrown to the ground and every now and then the bull stood with its full weight on the child. We saw quite a few people in pain that night anyway.

We had planned a 3 week housesit and decided to go to Brisbane the weekend before. It’s funny when you think about the distances because Brisbane is about 5-6 hours away, but many people from Bundaberg go for a weekend to Brisbane. I know that in the Netherlands we already find a distance from Utrecht to Groningen (about 2 hours) a little far, but they laugh about that here.

We had an Australian Football game scheduled for Friday night. For those who don’t know this sport (like me); it is played on an cricket pitch with 18 against 18 and the ball is a rugby ball. You score by shooting the ball between the 2 middle posts (6 points) or the 2 outer posts (1 point). You can run with the ball in your hands and you pass by kicking it or hitting the ball with the inside of your wrist. Do you still get it? Well, anyway, it was very entertaining to watch. Of course, hard tackling is also allowed and we had a great evening. We could get our faces painted for free outside, and I let some boys choose the face paint. That was also the last time I do that, because I walked around with a face full of glitter all evening. At least the boys thought it was cool 😊.

The rest of the weekend was also great fun, we had a nice dinner and saw some things of Brisbane that we hadn’t seen the first time. In the morning there was a market, in the afternoon we did a tour to the clock tower with a view over Brisbane and we even took a dance lesson in the evening, it’s a good thing there are no images of that πŸ˜‰.

Once back in Bundaberg we tried an whale watching day. It is currently the season for whales to travel north and many people spot them easily from the shore. Unfortunately for us it has remained with trying because we have not seen them. But participating is sometimes more important than winning! (not in this case, we would have loved to see whales)

So now I’m on the train to Brisbane, and why would I go there if I’ve just been there. Well I’m going to Bali for a few weeks 😊. I will tell more about that in my next blog, so like, share and subscribe to keep following! No, thanks again for reading and until next time! 😊
